Reduce Acne Flare-Ups with an Anti-Inflammatory Diet, Studies Suggest

Acne is a common skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. While there are many factors that can contribute to acne, including genetics and hormonal changes, inflammation is one of the most significant causes. Fortunately, research suggests that following an anti-inflammatory diet may help reduce acne flare-ups.
An anti-inflammatory diet consists of foods that are known to fight inflammation in the body. These include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, fatty fish like salmon and sardines, herbs and spices like turmeric and ginger, as well as healthy fats like olive oil.
One study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that participants who followed an anti-inflammatory diet experienced fewer acne breakouts compared to those who didn’t follow the diet plan. The researchers attributed this to the fact that the anti-inflammatory foods included in the diet helped reduce systemic inflammation in participants’ bodies.
Another study published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology found similar results. Participants who followed an anti-inflammatory diet had fewer inflammatory lesions on their skin compared to those who consumed a typical Western-style diet high in processed foods.
So what exactly should you eat if you want to follow an anti-inflammatory diet? Here are some tips:
1) Focus on plant-based foods: Fill your plate with plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables. Aim for at least five servings per day.
2) Choose whole grains: Opt for whole-grain breads, pasta or rice instead of refined white carbohydrates which can increase inflammation levels.
3) Incorporate healthy fats: Include avocados, nuts/seeds (like chia seeds), cold-pressed oils (such as extra virgin olive oil), or fatty fish into your meals regularly
4) Limit processed foods: Foods high in added sugars or artificial ingredients can trigger inflammation so try avoiding them when possible
5) Consider supplements: Some supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may benefit acne sufferers.
While there is no guaranteed cure for acne, adopting an anti-inflammatory diet can be a helpful tool in reducing inflammation in the body. It’s important to remember that everyone’s body is unique so finding what works best for you might take some experimentation. By incorporating more whole foods into your meals and limiting processed foods, it could lead to fewer breakouts and clearer skin!
